ALUM

ALUM

Alum refers to a class of double sulfate salts, most commonly Potassium Aluminum Sulfate (potassium alum), used for water purification, as an astringent (aftershave, styptic), in dyeing, and baking; it's a crystalline mineral known for its antiseptic, tightening properties, often called phitkari in India, available as blocks or powder, and can also informally mean an alumnus/alumna.

Chemical & Physical Properties:

  • Type: A hydrated double sulfate salt, usually of aluminum and a monovalent cation (K, Na, NH4).
  • Appearance: Colorless, clear, crystalline solid or granular powder with an astringent taste.

How it Works (Astringent):

  • Alum tightens tissues, reduces inflammation, and acts as a mild antiseptic by disinfecting surfaces and inhibiting bacterial growth, making it great for skincare and oral hygiene.
